- 10-Minute Cooking School: Sin City Breakfast Tacos
I’ll have to get up a bit earlier to make the tortillas from scratch but I’m determined to make the Sin City Breakfast Taco this weekend.
- Tuff Beans
Our last meal in Tofino was at a great little cafe called Tuff Beans (151 Campbell) for breakfast. They do a great fry-up,have free wi-fi and serve Kicking Horse coffee.
- Lazy Bread

I just bought my first piece of Le Creuset. A 5.5 quart flame orange french oven and while googling it I learned all about no-knead bread.
“It involves flour, salt, yeast and water then, without any more than mixing it together, letting it rise for 18 hours or more and baking it in a covered pot. The action of the yeast develops the glutens for you. The method produces bread with an chewy structure and a crisp hearty crust.”
We’ve been kneading our bread in the machine then baking in the oven but we’re always up for something new. More photos of No-Knead Bread on Flickr. (more…)
- Ramen Styles of Japan

A breakdown of Japanese regional ramen styles. What, no tantanmen love? My personal favourite is shoyu chashumen, but that may change soon with my new found love of all things miso.
- Shelter Restaurant Tofino
I picked the wrong time to start this weblog as we’ve been out of town up island attending my cousin’s wedding in Tofino for the weekend. The first two nights we spent in an executive suite at the Tin Wis Resort so most meals we ate in, until today. For dinner, Masako the kids and I walked up the street from our hotel to Shelter, a spot we noticed earlier in the day while driving into Tofino. A stylish, newly renovated west coast bistro with large stone fireplace, open kitchen and surprisingly affordable menu has easily been the highlight of our trip, apart from the wedding of course. After finishing her eggplant ratatouille, with grilled asparagus, Masako remarked that this had been the best dinning experience since we moved back to Canada. I had a thin crust pizza with provolone, mozzarella, parmesan, bacon, chorizo and basil drizzled with a balsamic sauce with a pint of my current favourite local brew, Blue Truck Ale. While the weather hasn’t been the best I have no doubt that we’ll be back in Tofino soon and we’ll be back to Shelter as well, just hope we can take advantage of the patio next time. Tomorrow we’re heading to Breakers for breakfast before driving home and hoping for a repeat success. (more…)
